| Abstract |
The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence to Kate and Julia Wheeler from relatives, friends, and classmates. Correspondents include Fannie Hooper; Miss M. M. Fowle, of Washington, N.C.; John Hill Wheeler; Samuel Jordan Wheeler; and Mary Branch, Kate's grandmother and wife of Governor John Branch. Letters discuss plans for the Chowan Female Collegiate Institute; life at Columbian College in Washington, D.C; social life and customs, such as a conversation with Mrs. Jefferson Davis on the role of women, and women's dress and other aspects of parties at the White House; living conditions and activities of the Hertford Light Infantry at Portsmouth, N.C.; the discovery of Union ships off Hatteras; "Buffalo" troops in the Albemarle section of North Carolina; a speech by Jefferson Davis at Raleigh; Davis's activities at Fortress Monroe, Va; and camp life. Collection also includes Kate Wheeler's diaries, in which she discusses her routine activities as a student in Raleigh, daily life in Murfreesboro, and war-related developments in Murfreesboro. Also included are financial records; school records; genealogical materials of the Wheeler and Bond families; and the papers of Samuel J. Wheeler, which include a fragment of an essay on religion in Murfreesboro. |

| Biographical note | Catherine (Kate) Pugh Wheeler (1837-1912), native of Murfreesboro, N.C., studied at Chowan Female Collegiate Institute and at a private school in Raleigh. Wheeler married John Walston Cooper in 1866. |
